The hypotheses was that through appropriating tools and techniques from two secular theories - Solution-Focused Brief Therapy and Cognitive Therapy - people of hope, especially those who have lost a spouse of a number of years, could learn to live again, laugh again, and love again with the faith and hope that their separation is a temporary one, not a permanent one. The model was a blended pre-post Functional Change and Theological Appropriation of a Secular Theory approach. The project addresses three questions. Do sacred rites and rituals contribute to the healing that occurs in the pastoral counseling relationship? How are sacred rites and rituals therapeutic?  Under what circumstances do rites and rituals bring healing?  Five counseling cases from the author's pastoral counseling practice are presented and analyzed using a qualitative methodology. The women used story-linking to connect familiar stories of their friends with biblical scriptures and with writings by Mechthild of Madgeburg. The project had three phases: interviews which included drawing a picture of God and self, ten worship times developed for the student body, and a second set of interviews with a second picture.  The findings, while not completely able to support the author's thesis since the project was subjective, did reveal naturally curious children who were eager to explore God's presence in their lives.
