This effort is framed by the Susquehanna Health Pastoral Care Department's transition from a center of clinical pastoral education to a hospital department comprised of professional chaplains ministering to the spiritual needs of patients, their families, and hospital staff. A combination of questionaires, research on theological significance of infant baptism, and a study workshop, followed up with an evaluation proved an adequate method to achieve this goal. The results illustrated the possibility of this kind of story taking place in other presbyteries. This paper offers a working definition of 'social ministry,' a review of that construct in Scripture and Church history, and an assessment of the likelihood of students becoming social ministry practitioners. Discussion focuses on sermon memory as it relates to my own experience, the church's varied theological understanding, Scripture, and the insights of psychology.  Research explores the meaning, importance, and development of memory in the ancient faith community, preaching as oral communication, twenty-first century culture, sermon delivery, sermon structure and content, visual and/or auditory aids, and the role of the Holy Spirit in memory. Classes clarified understanding and deepened the participants' appreciation of sacred tradition while guiding them in discernment of the Church's call and purpose. Specifically the problem centers on a single parish in Berkley, Michigan where second and third generation descendants of Middle Eastern immigrants are losing interest in the church and the cultural heritage of their parents.
