The author identifies 'new realities' that are reshaping American's denominational landscape, outlines key biblical guidelines, and explores the concept of Christian stewardship and the Baptist doctrine of 'soul competency' as theological foundations for the practice of communications and marketing. A telephone survey of 500 CBF members formed the heart of the project's research phase. The Bible addresses more than just the stewardship of the money and material possessions we have.  It also speaks to issues related to the stewardship of our time and talents. However, this project focuses exclusively on the stewardship of our finances. In summary, chapter 1 of the project provides introductory and background material on the context in which the project was implemented.  It also provides a rationale for the project.  Chapter 2 examines the biblical, theological and historical principles and practices of financial stewardship.  Chapter 3 discusses the sociological, psychological and motivational aspects of philanthropy, as well as offers a few ideas about the ways we are motivated to give in the Scriptures. Chapter 2 gives the biblical and theological bases for Christian stewardship and chapter 4 contains sermons and other teaching materials implemented in the training program.  Chapters 3 and 5 include the summaries and evaluations of group discussions and the questionnaire instrument. Chapter three conducts a historical review of the nature of philanthropy that covers: the nature of philanthropy, the development of philanthropy, philanthropy in America from the colonial period to the present, the history of philanthropy in the Southern Baptist Convention and philanthropic data from 1968-1998.  Chapter four describes the selection of the WMU state consultants and details the content and information of the five training sessions.
