This included the patient, the family, and the hospital employees who rendered care to these individuals.  The research and ministry project occurred at Baptist Memorial Hospital East, Memphis, Tennessee, involving a potential patient population exceeding 110.  Research indicates four definite areas of need: a family support group, recreational activities, staff support, and pastoral care presence. Toward this end five separate strategies were utilized: an eight-week prayer course for volunteers; three sermons; a restructuring of the Sunday morning worship service to include a stronger emphasis on the pastoral prayer; a restructuring of the Wednesday night prayer service to encourage mutual congregational intercession; and the initiation of a continuing prayer ministry in the church. An eight-week course for a group of fifteen parents was developed and implemented, covering such topics as communication, discipline, and faith development.  Pretests and posttests were administered to the group members.  The posttest results revealed increases in the awareness of some important factors for parents affected by divorce.  The responses showed especially favorable reactions to the relational aspect of the group. This statement was tested with the use of a questionnaire, given as both a pretest and posttest, during the fall semester.  An effective female ministry was modeled during worship services in the semester, and a small group Bible study was held for four weeks in October. Data was compiled, cross-tabs were run, and the results were analyzed.  Sex was found to be of some significance as a factor in answering the questions. The narrative approach to evangelism utilized an inductive presentation of scriptural and non-scriptural stories to prompt multi-dimensional conversion among hearers.  A twelve-member experimental group participated in training in the fall of 1989.  A twelve-member control group did not participate.  Pretest and posttest surveys and other instruments were used to evaluate the effects of training. Participants increased their understanding of the gospel as narrative and multi-dimensional conversion. A sound biblical and historical base for the devotional program was constructed by using the literary research presented in chapter 2. Chapter 3 outlines adapted procedures from content analysis used to evaluate the social research data received from the twenty Masterlife members taking part in the project.  The common devotional needs revealed in pretest efforts guided the focus for the new devotional curriculum.  The literary research in chapter 2 was used to address these discovered devotional needs.
