For many immigrants adjusting to life in the United States, in which their children have had to adjust to life in a whole new culture, it is often the case that they have not been able to pay much attention to their children's lives. Now, these parents face the problem of communicating to and discipling children that have grown up in a completely different language and culture—having been assimilated to the culture and having been educated in the United States growing up with a completely different set of values from their parents' generation. As such, problems and conflicts within Korean immigrant families in the United States continue to grow. For Christians, the problems they face often find their children leaving their homes and leaving their churches. The two focus groups for this project at Fellowship Bible Church of Jacksonville, Texas, were the Sermon-Only Group and the Sermon and Sermon-Based Home-Discipleship Group. The Sermon-Only Group listened to four sermons through the book of Zephaniah (selected because of its length, unfamiliarity, and gospel themes). The Sermon and Sermon-Based Home-Discipleship Group listened to the sermons and also participated in a four-week, twenty-lesson study on Zephaniah in the home. The two groups were tested on their retention and application of what was taught from the book. The thesis of this project was that parents and children in the Sermon and Sermon-Based Home-Discipleship Group would retain more of the Word of God and more faithfully apply the Word when compared to the Sermon-Only Group. Chapter 1 addresses the problem of biblical illiteracy while also introducing the thesis. Chapter 2 makes an argument in favor of home discipleship both biblically and historically. Chapter 3 makes an argument biblically and practically for sermon-based instruction, introducing and explaining the effectiveness of using sermon-based curriculum in the home. Chapter 4 explains the preparation for and execution of the ministry project at FBC of Jacksonville. Chapter 5 includes a report on the findings from the project. The main reason for this appears to be cultural;  a Korean cherishes his honor and tends to keep up appearances. The Korean term for this is che myun. To overcome this cultural barrier, the project leader developed the delayed-response invitation program. He projects this program to be a more effective invitation method for Korean people than the immediate-response invitation. The project involved evangelistic preaching, the project leader made an announcement that a class would start the following week for those interested in learning more about the Christian faith. Those who responded to such an invitation were connected automatically to a four-week teaching program. The author compared a control group of Maasai pastors and the respective congregations studying the Theological Education by Extension (TEE) textbook of 1 Corinthians with a test group of Maasai pastors and their respective congregations learning the text by the narrative paradigm (storying). The test group outperformed the control group in tangible oral tests derived from the TEE textbook over a ten week period. It is a ten-session, twelve hour training course.  For this project the course was conducted using a retreat setting for half of the sessions and five consecutive Sunday evenings for the remaining sessions.  The primary target group is adult teachers currently serving in the project leader's church.  In addition, a select number of potential leaders were enlisted to participate. The project will address the following content areas: The purpose of Sunday School, the role of teaching in Sunday School, spiritual gifts in relationship to teaching, developmental stages of adults, learning and how learning occurs, levels of learning, how to study the Bible, lesson preparation steps, methods of teaching, lesson presentation skills, learning styles, and teaching for spiritual transformation. This course is designed to only address teaching needs and does not address organizational or outreach roles for the teacher.  A course text will be prepared by the project leader along with various teaching aids, worksheets, survey forms, visual aids, and evaluation forms. It included only the first six sessions of a proposed twenty four session strategy. The project was effective as a pilot strategy and will continue to be edited. The curricula was a combination of materials complied by the project leader and materials written by the project leader. The project leader read books, studied other discipleship materials, conducted interviews, and utilized several evaluations tools to attain and measure the goals of this strategy. An explanation and understanding of the 'bow tie' theory of church growth and the development of a five-year growth strategy will also be presented. The project leader will lead an eight-week training period with the adult Sunday School teachers after the evening worship service. Each session will last approximately one hour. The sessions will seek to expand the teacher's knowledge of the importance of Sunday School as well as seek to improve the organization of the Sunday School program at Chapel Grove Baptist Church. This project, upon completion, will provide the Sunday School ministry at Chapel Grove Baptist Church a strong foundation upon which to build for the future. The goal is to provide a plan that will not only impact the present but also the future.
