Pastoral Epistles","Clergy--Appointment, call, and election"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project argues that preaching text-driven sermons on the biblical qualifications of an overseer with reference to his children can clarify and enhance congregational understanding of the importance of upholding them. Dealing with the sensitive topic regarding a pastor and his children through the method of expository preaching allows one to depend upon the authority of God’s Word while drawing attention to the necessity of upholding this neglected pastoral qualification.After addressing the biblical and theological foundations for this topic (chapter 2) and reviewing its related literature (chapter 3), the importance of text-driven preaching is discussed by focusing on the biblical authority, examples throughout history, and benefits of this approach to preaching (chapter 4).Chapter 5 reveals the exegesis of the passages pertinent to this topic from 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. Chapter 6 provides six principles one should implement when constructing text-driven sermons and how the application of these principles formed three sermons from the relevant texts for this project. Chapter 7 details the conclusions drawn after preaching these respective sermons to a test group of ministers. This desire to encourage first-time pastors is the heart of this dissertation's work. The dissertation is an attempt to provide assistance to first-time pastors in order to possibly prevent what happened to the writer from happening to them. First-time pastors encounter ministry challenges. these ministerial challenges can be overcome through encouragement received in relationships with seasoned mentors such as directors of missions. Through research, ten of the most prevalent crises encountered were identified. For each crisis, situations were analyzed to determine successful pulpit approaches that have proven beneficial to particular pastors in jeopardizing situations. This research found a strong correlation between preaching God's Word and weathering the storms of ministry. Individuals within the church who have evidenced a call to vocational ministry will be paired with a pastoral staff member who will serve as a mentor. The program will attempt to develop these ministerial students through mentoring relationships. The project leader will meet weekly with the pastoral staff and ministerial students for large group teaching sessions related to spiritual growth and ministry. The six members of the pastoral staff will meet with smaller groups of ministerial students (two or three students) on a weekly basis for mentoring. The mentoring meetings will consist of debriefing these students on the personal growth achieved through the teaching sessions and various assignments. The pastoral staff will meet together weekly to discuss issues and questions related to individual groups. This project will provide a preparatory learning experience for ministerial students and show that mentoring is an effective means of spiritual and vocational growth.
