Looking at text, tradition, and actual practice, the latter of which was gained through a survey of American Baptist pastors -- the writer evaluated approaches to this question, determining that inconsistency too often emerges in the context of application. The initial research and review was accomplished through interviews and pastoral as well as church input, and through biblical study and insight, the need for additional training was evident. As a result of this investigation, the conclusion was reached that the project leader would develop a six-month deacon leadership model. In summary, the goal of this project to assist prospective deacons in discovering their true ministerial calling was reached. It is even more difficult in a congregation made up of members from the baby boomer and baby buster generations.  These individuals have an aversion to making commitments.  This project teaches deacons how to maintain involvement of baby boomers and baby busters in an effort to reduce the growing number of inactive church members.  The project begins with training of deacons over seven weeks.  Deacons then interview inactive members to determine what factors led to their reduced involvement. The writer developed a project within his local congregation designed to respond to these needs for the church, the prospective deacons, and their families.  The pastor developed a pretest, posttest, accompanied by appropriate training, for all groups of participants.
