There seem to be two extremes in answer to this question. The liberal side seems to blame the system. The reason many black Americans fall behind other groups is blamed on institutional racism or something ingrained in the American system that curtail flourishing for Americans of African descent. On the other hand, most on the moderate and conservative sides do not deny the black experience through slavery and Jim Crow. Yet they emphasized that Americans of African descent can do better by practicing the same tried and true methods that made other Americans successful. The dissertation will take the view that the major source of the problems in the black community has its origin in the demise of the traditional family. Statistics, written testimony, historical fact, common sense, and a biblical Christian worldview will be used to help pinpoint and offer solutions to the problem. The family that is founded on one mother and one father who are married to each other and who respond to one another as well as their children, in the way the Bible prescribes, is the only normal family. Anything else can only be second best. A pre-test and post-test evaluation compared a study group and a control group.  Some participants showed marked improvement on cognitive and attitudinal scores.  For the most part, improvement in both cognitive learning and attitudinal change was modest.  The study group demonstrated a stronger understanding and commitment to these biblical teachings than the author had anticipated. One of the major needs that must be addressed in the Christian community and in the local church is the mentoring of Christian men in family leadership. Even when men lead at work, in the community and other places, often they do not effectively lead at home.  A partial remedy for this need is to place these men into accountability groups.  One such group will be formed with five men who desire to develop their spiritual leadership skills.  The purpose of the twelve sixty-minute sessions is for the men to grow in their spiritual leadership ability.  A part of the information for each session will be submitted by thirty or more spiritually mature Christian men who will comment on the kind  of spiritual leadership they practice in their families. It is hoped that the principles that are taught to the men will be caught by the spirit of the project leader and the other men involved in the advisory group.
