shortage of qualified preachers.  A high rate of pastoral turnover and geographic isolation necessitate the training of lay preachers to meet this need.  Lay preachers can be effective if they understand the communication patterns of the traditional/oral listeners who occupy these pews.  This project equipped a group of laymen from a large urban church to preach in the small rural churches of Oklahoma.  The laymen were trained to understand and appreciate biblical narrative.  they learned basic storytelling skills.  They worked to construct and deliver sermons that respected the traditional/oral communication keys of stories, relationships, and proverbial sayings. The project used a series of theological lessons followed by surveys of the congregation to introduce the team concept to the church, concluding with a small group training seminar.  Spiritual gifts of church members were identified, and these gifts and interests directed formation of ministry teams in the congregation to accomplish specific ministry tasks. Seven persons were trained for nine weeks in caregiving skills, crisis recognition, theological backgrounds, and self-understanding.  Six sermons focused the congregation on the Christian's response to various human needs.  The project resulted in personal growth and self-awareness for those equipped as crisis caregivers.  The development of the crisis care team multiplied the ministry of the professional clergy. Because this is true, the planning of corporate worship must be a priority.  The laity should be included in worship planning.  The author equipped eight members of a local church to plan and evaluate worship services during a nine-week training process.  The worship team has made a positive impact in the life of the church. The primary purpose of the project is to lead participants of the study group to become more faithful pastoral care-givers in the church and in the community. The objective of the project will be accomplished through a nine-week study group. The study group will concentrate on three major areas of study. The author will seek to assist those who have had an encounter with evil and suffering to interpret their own experience.  Biblical and philosophical knowledge will be integrated with their personal experience as a means of equipping them to provide care for others who are currently suffering.  The project proposes that attempts to address the problem of evil and suffering through theodicy fail to provide both the adequate theoretical answers and the practical comfort sufferers need.  The project further proposes that the personal experience of those who have suffered uniquely qualifies them to address the suffering of others.  The concepts of a suffering God and the ethical demands of the incarnation will be presented as a basis for a philosophy of ministry to fellow sufferers. The power of personal testimony, the power of presence, the process of grief, and the pursuit of a mature faith will be offered as a means of preparing individuals to provide care for fellow sufferers.
