The Bible is filled with charges and directions for a life full of meaning.  Matthew 28:19-20 gives us a precise command, 'Therefore go and make disciples of all nations.'  The charge of making disciples is clear and direct.  The question comes about when determining how best to make disciples.  Jesus used modeling and mentoring.  The established example of Jesus mentoring is the one that will be discussed and followed.     There is a great need in youth ministries for students to see how other students who are committed followers of Jesus Christ live their lives.  The project leader believes a teenage student better relates to another teenage student than to an adult.  A student mentor can grow personally by being trained to mentor, as well as become prepared to minister to their mentoree. This project will develop a curriculum for teenage leaders to lead younger students to understand how they can have a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.  The project leader will work with the mentor development team to develop six sessions that will be used by student mentors to lead a younger teenage mentoree.  The mentor will spend one on one time with a student who is two or more years younger than the mentor.  The mentoree will be trained to understand how to have a closer relationship with Jesus, as well as be encouraged to become a mentor to a younger student. A lack of engagement in ministry and fellowship provides opportunities for newcomers to fall away unnoticed.  A four-week course for new members was the heart of the program and required the project leader to design and acquire resources.  Church members and members of the staff provided assistance with the preparation, instruction, and execution of the program.  Each new member received information regarding the church, ministry opportunities, Baptist basics, and the Christian life. It is a ten-session, twelve hour training course.  For this project the course was conducted using a retreat setting for half of the sessions and five consecutive Sunday evenings for the remaining sessions.  The primary target group is adult teachers currently serving in the project leader's church.  In addition, a select number of potential leaders were enlisted to participate. The project will address the following content areas: The purpose of Sunday School, the role of teaching in Sunday School, spiritual gifts in relationship to teaching, developmental stages of adults, learning and how learning occurs, levels of learning, how to study the Bible, lesson preparation steps, methods of teaching, lesson presentation skills, learning styles, and teaching for spiritual transformation. This course is designed to only address teaching needs and does not address organizational or outreach roles for the teacher.  A course text will be prepared by the project leader along with various teaching aids, worksheets, survey forms, visual aids, and evaluation forms. The church has grown rapidly in the past four years. Many of the people added to the church have come from completely secular backgrounds or Christian traditions other than evangelical. These new members must be trained in order to retain them. The plan of ministry will be for the writer to recruit a team of eight to ten mentors. These mentors will be trained for a period of four weeks. In the implementation phase, the mentors will meet weekly with new members for discussion of the previous Sunday morning message as well as some additional Bible study. An evaluation will be performed at every stage of the process. The mentors will evaluate each training session. Both mentors and new members will evaluate each message and mentoring session. The plan is to begin a healing process with these pastors in such a way that they will see God's strength and love and that they will have viable tools at their disposal for current or future conflict situations. Specifically, the issues of any past conflict situation(s) will be examined. Tools will be offered to manage future conflicts.  Information from target pastors who have experienced forced termination(s) will be solicited. During their interviews, these pastors will be asked to identify the circumstances surrounding their particular forced termination(s). After gathering as much information as possible, this project leader will instruct these pastors in three areas: multi-level polarity management of conflicts, conflict information in general, and scriptural helps. Three other aids will be offered. The first is to teach the same information to any group of people in the churches where these pastors serve. The second is to establish a prayer support group for these pastors and their families from other local pastors. The third is to offer to preach a sermon in each church where these pastors serve. The sermon will show Christian harmony and the need for a ministry focus. This project will produce a handbook for biblical preaching in the African-American church. The handbook will include all nine lessons, handouts, exercises, and an annotated bibliography. The handbook could be used to train associate ministers in their local church, a retreat, or in self-help. For this project, the handbook will be used to train associate preachers in the project leader's church during a nine-week program. The majority of Seventh-day Adventist churches in Texas are in a district consisting of two or three churches that share one pastor. The district pastor often can not be in every church each week, creating a need for lay leaders to preach. This D.Min. project is divided into two sections. The first three weeks of this project will equip the local pastor to become a mentor to lay leaders in order to help them develop skills in Bible-based preaching. During the next six weeks, each pastor will lead in a workshop that is designed to assist one or both lay leaders in their development and delivery of a Bible-based, Christ-centered sermon. The project leader seeks to target both traditional and postmodern members of all ages and lengths of membership that will result in a wide cross section from the congregation. This will enable a balanced approach to the understanding needed to properly evaluate past history, define current growth and allow for creative planning for the future. This model will address both the traditional and postmodern cultures each with its own unique needs and desires. The project leader wishes for both groups to grow numerically and spiritually within the church. The challenge will be to lead both generations to appreciate one another and to allow that appreciation to lead them to cooperating together in the spirit of unity. The desired outcome of this research project if for both traditional and postmodern members to understand each other's various needs and to be willing to accept ministries that will meet the needs of both groups within the same congregation and in the community.
