The first chapter includes a brief description of the biblical and theological data which shaped the church's disciple making ministry. The second chapter surveys the writings of three influential schools of thought in discipleship and how they interplayed with the author's views on discipleship. It also explains some historical factors which have affected the church's disciple making ministry. The third chapter records the steps taken to improve the church's ability to make disciples. These steps cover many areas: small group ministries, organizational documents 9such as the constitution and by-laws), adult education ministries, leadership development structures, and staffing procedures. Often those of us who find ourselves in these situations look for a pre-packaged program that will simply plug into the current church. The research discloses that pre-packaged programs have a fatal flaw in that they are not transculturally friendly. It also discloses that it is better to develop a program based on the specific culture in which the church is located. This project seeks to address and answer the question of how local churches survive and thrive in the shadow of the mega-churches. The focus of this project is to define the options those churches have in metropolitan areas. Options are limited to the strategies suggested by Lyle Schaller in his book, 21 Bridges to the 21st Century. The history of Latin American Christianity reveals that the gospel has not been fully and meaningfully communicated, and that traditional methods, which have been strictly theologically oriented, have been polemical and relatively unsuccessful. This paper first develops a theology of petitionary prayer, especially the significance of praying according to the will of God. The author examines four 'turning points' (the First and Second Great Awakenings, the Businessmen's Revival of 1857-58 and mid-twentieth century evangelism) in American religious history and discusses the relationship between spiritual revival and cultural engagement during periods of awakening. An argument is made for the connection between cultivating one's worldview and the ability to interact with those in the postmodern world. Careful study is made of the characteristics of postmodernism, along with a survey of about two dozen Campus Crusade staff in Germany--measuring their present effectiveness in evangelism. A three-day conference introduced the staff to this worldview.
