There is little understanding of the strategic need for a phased program of disciple making. Some churches are behind in this matter in that the church makes no arrangement for a planned, cohesive, well-coordinated ministry of taking people from the basic truths of the gospel and moves them on in the growing process. Pastors can have effective ministry as disciple makers and as change agents in the local church to help alleviate this problem. There are people in the local church who have never moved beyond simple belief in Jesus Christ; one result being a void in lay-workers and stunted spiritual lives. This major project is designed to demonstrate practically how a pastor can effectively lead a men's small group basic discipleship course. By addressing and resolving their conflicts individuals and groups of people develop an internal rigor, enhance mutual understanding, sharpen their mandates, and deal proactively with important issues in their lives and societies. The two factors that harness conflict's catalytic potential and avert conflict's destructive power are mechanisms for directing conflict toward positive outcomes and effective mediators. The research base was constructed around the writer's experience as a mediator and his ongoing study in the field. The final product should serve as a theological foundation for preaching and a practical guide to all who would preach and teach at the local church level. Preaching should be mission-specific, that is, facilitate the purpose of the church, making disciples. The paper considers why purpose or mission is important to the discipline of homiletics. It surveys scripture, church history and modern theology concerning 'mission' in the life of the church. Finally it proposes and defends a Christ-centered hermeneutic and Christ-centered preaching. The project traces the development of the retreat's design to accomplish these objectives. The achievement of these objectives is evaluated through the use of reflections by retreat participants, surveys of retreat alums, and interviews with pastors. The study of four large North American Chinese churches will provide case studies profiles in order to learn what ministry paradigms are being used to minister to diverse, multicultural congregations. The project conclusion is that parallel ministry paradigm has the most to recommend for any growing Chinese church with multiple worship congregations and multiple pastoral staff. The primary tool for relating to all treatment patients--the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous is discussed from a biblical perspective. The three basic approaches to assisting patients solve their addiction problem--psychological, physiological, and theological are presented. The psychological and physiological approaches are mentioned to provide a brief exposure to them. The theological method is covered in detail. This is the primary approach of the pastor working in treatment. The workshop helped these leaders investigate this tool to determine if they would like to pursue its use and offered assistance in how to find a spiritual direction relationship. A handbook entitled the Beginner's guide to spiritual direction relationships (SDR) is included which workshop participants read along with attending eight sessions to discuss the handbook and other topics related to SDR. It is our conviction that those whose ministry it is to make disciples of Jesus Christ need to be helped in making sure they are attending to becoming disciples themselves.
