It arose from the author’s reflection on her own spiritual journey, from her professional experience as a psychotherapist, and from the observation that psychological barriers often impede spiritual progress. While the psychotherapeutic and spirituality literature often exist in separate silos, and the two professions tend to operate in different domains, the author contends that spiritual formation/direction and psychotherapy in combination are often what is needed to bring about Christlikeness. A psychospiritual model of Christian formation is presented that integrates insights from both domains with particular attention to the rich spiritual traditions of Protestant, Orthodox and Catholic understandings of psychological wholeness and spiritual holiness. To test this integrated model, a field research project was carried out to explore the effect of an integrated, eight-session psychoeducational program with individuals whose spiritual lives were affected by trauma and unforgiveness. The findings of the study suggest that attachment theory and trauma-informed principles may help people move forward in the process of forgiveness and spiritual growth. Thisportfolio begins with the author’s spiritual autobiography and with thatknowledge the model of spiritual formation was developed. The spiritual modelcan be pictured using an image of a wheel where Christ is placed at the hub (thecenter) of one’s life and is connected to all the spokes (or parts) of one’s life. Themodel works to encourage people to move Christ closer to the center of theirlives, where they can live and have their being in their “true selves,” as God’s willintends.Using this model of spiritual formation, a field research project wasdeveloped to help spiritually form the spiritual leaders of the OakridgePresbyterian Church congregation towards a greater unity in Christ. Using theExamen as a spiritual practice helped guide participants to focus and beintentional about noticing God’s presence in all things and therefore helping tokeep Christ as the centre of their life. More significantly, there was born in me a deep desire to discover how God formed and transformed me. Fueled by the courses in the DMin program, this growing interest in spiritual formation led me to believe that the teaching and understanding of spiritual formation must become the priority of my thinking and practice of ministry moving forward.In the second section of this portfolio, my understanding of the spiritual formation process developed into a manual for teaching a basic spiritual formation course for believers.For the third section, in order to see if a persuasive case could be made for teaching spiritual formation basics to everyone in the congregation, a research project was undertaken to teach spiritual formation to the elders of my church. Ultimately, the findings of the research did support that teaching spiritual formation will lead believers to a more comprehensive understanding.
