The inquiry built on the common ground for unity, offered an experience of cohesion for the leaders, facilitated relationship building and unveiled a story of their church in new light. It showed that Appreciative Inquiry can be an effective means for crossing sub-group boundaries and intercultural barriers. The author studied six participants as they progressed through ACLDM by engaging in three phases of learning while in consultation with three supporting parties to determine if leadership growth occurred. The methodology used was primarily qualitative research and used methods of survey, observation and guided interviews to collect data. The research indicated that every participant experienced perceived growth while going through ACLDM. They met for eleven sessions of four hours over twelve months. A pre and post 360 survey, correspondence, field notes and session transcripts provided data that indicated positive development of the participants' missional leadership capacities. Experimentation, cohort learning and both experienced and local coaching were among elements that contributed to this development. The components of the 'Adaptive Courage' model include irrational thoughts, emotional sabotage, relational seclusion, volitional inaction, and spiritual inattentiveness with their counterparts ensnared opportunity, humble confidence, selective vulnerability, incremental tenacity, and simple transcendence. Ten diverse leaders participated in individual intake and teaching sessions and follow-up debriefing and assessment sessions. This research project examined how ten three-hour sessions of training delivered over a 16-week period impacted the intercultural competency of eighteen Christian leaders from diverse cultural backgrounds. Three conceptual models that were foundational in designing this training: Bennett's 'Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity' (Bennett 1998), Deardorff's 'Process Model of Intercultural Competence' (Deardorff 2006), and Berry's 'Model of Acculturation' (Berry 2005). Both the IDI assessment and participant feedback suggested a significant development of intercultural competency of the members of the study group, indicating that a training intervention such as this could increase a leader's motivation, cultural self-awareness, knowledge and skills enabling them to navigate the complexities of intercultural ministry. The author facilitated a series of seminar-workshops that were guided by two action research cycles and appreciative inquiry. Participant interaction during the workshops provided data which was supplemented by focus groups, natural observation and interviews. Positive mentoring relationships have been initiated that promise to lead to a mentoring culture in the context. The leaders developed three areas listed in Natural Church Development as being critical to a healthy growing church. A survey was conducted and then the leaders made changes to their model of leadership shifting from a 'top-down model' to a model that empowered others and shared authority. A second survey measured congregational responses to the changes.
