The families were cared for with support and compassion, decreasing their levels of anxiety and allowing the healthcare team uninterrupted opportunities to assess and treat the patients. Qualitative research was employed to test the model's effectiveness, by means of pre- and posttest, questionnaires, and interviews. Disease frequently occurs when a patient's lifestyle is not in harmony with his/her attitudes, values and beliefs.  This study explores ways in which physicians and clergy can work together to foster wholistic health for patients.  The University of Michigan, Department of Family Practice has employed a full-time pastoral counselor/ethicist to further the cooperation between clergy and physicians.  Through a training program focused on counseling skills, clergy and physicians have developed comfortable working relationships.
