Through a program based upon the gestalt cycle of experience and conducted in a university context, alienated Catholics were encouraged to redefine their religious symbols. Foundational to the project was a theory base and paradigm produced by the author outlining and defining morally/spiritually rooted cultures.  Robert Kegan and James Fowler influenced this material.  Research included the field test and the development of a Moral/Spiritual Awareness Inventory which was also used in a limited external sample.  The inventory does seem to measure moral/spiritual development. Each project associate had time for self-reflection and discovery so that they, as the church, could work intentionally at being an affirming body.  The author outlined this concept, termed 'affirmation', and its biblical, theological and psychological bases.  He reported the process of the project, as well as the results.  The project included contextual and biographical statements. The author and nine members of St John's United Methodist Church in Gbarnga, Liberia, studied the book of Exodus and focused on issues of contextualization.  They identified issues common to Hebrew and Kpelle cultures, and considered tribal elements such as proverbs, stories, idioms, and theology.
