The author researched this subject matter by studying the history of racism and sexism in America and in the African American church.  She interviewed women preachers and male preachers who have had a history of supporting, affirming and celebrating women in ministry and in leadership roles in the church. Congregants of one local historically black church, however, appropriated biblical and African American voices as prototypical sources of 'faith' to guide the church's response to those challenges. The process of 'faith story-sharing,' a methodology designed to enable older adults to recall, share and celebrate their individual faith journeys, is introduced and utilized to allow elders to explore the meaning of their life stories in relationship to the biblical story and their identity in their communities. The author researched current life review and reminiscence methods and then developed a unique process that differs in three distinct ways: faith story-sharing is (1) faith-based, (2) a communal experience, and (3) honors the cultural and religious traditions of older African American women.
