What kind of engagement with sermons, liturgies, and bible study will help 21st century western Christians recover this lost practice? In this project, the author outlines a five week study experience designed to introduce participants to lament, and help them experience it using bible study, responsive prayer, bibliodrama, and song. Participants from five churches took part in the program. A lectionary study book on suffering and three specific psalms was prepared.  A diverse group of pastors was recruited to take part in the study and preach a three-Sunday sermon series on three lament psalms.  The goal was to move congregants from cultural forms of denial of suffering to a biblical theology of communicating suffering.  Response cards indicated that 40% of the respondents changed their beliefs regarding God and suffering. The author has developed a model which uses core components of the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) combined with psalms and other faith-based resources to form a protocol for a faithful intervention in a crisis situation. Psalms of lament and Hip Hop lyrics convey a reality of fear, hopelessness, anger, and a deliverance motif by a God who cares about the people. The author contends that the black church should adapt to the language of youth via Hip Hop to develop rap music as a resource. Although there is an emphatic picture of the 'net' and 'pits' of sin, there also is a stronger message of salvation (wholeness). The lament psalms are most effective in providing expressions of hopelessness, anger, fear, guilt, and hope within the context of faith.  Their concept of wholeness is substantiated by contemporary scientific research.  The church needs to take its part in this emerging discovery of its own ancient world.
