The particular subjects under investigation are 24 affluent American University students who chose to participate in an 'alternative spring break' to Honduras, Nicaragua, Cuba, Chiapas Mexico, Zambia or Vietnam. Relying on interviews and observation, the author concluded that these short impressions provided the students with an occasion for reexamination of their own lives and an opportunity for experiencing transcendence. Although shocked by the inhuman living conditions in El Salvador, three delegations from Holy Trinity Parish returned with more compassion and interest in service projects for the marginalized in the Salvadoran sister parish, but with a mixed interest in addressing the structural causes of poverty. Section two presents a detailed outline of the social ethic of Advaita Vedanta, in terms of historical development, theology and scripture.  Section three presents the actual project, an encounter between a group of Indian Christians and Indian Hindus, all of whom are engaged in health or population issues professionally.
