Is there an effective method of intervention that can change the direction of struggling churches? This project designed an intervention utilizing the adaptive challenge approach to help churches discern the next step. After a six- week Bible Study followed by a workshop, their values and beliefs were challenged. It reflects on the theology of discernment in the Christian tradition with particular emphasis on Ignatius of Loyola and the Quaker tradition, as well as in-depth interviews with United Methodist clergy on the practices of discernment that have been helpful to them over the course of their career with an emphasis on how to transition from positive placement settings. The project shows how congregations discern God's lead in decision making through their daily life situation, social contexts, and various other circumstances.  The central task of this project is to trace the path of the planning process that KUMCGW pursued to discern God's plan and analyze the various factors that worked together to attain it.  With biblical, theological, and historical research, the varied ways of discernment are summed up in two categories: the realistic/rationalistic way and the pietistic/mystical way of discernment. The toxic congregation is one that abuses power by attacking integrity and competence, withholding financial giving, making threats, physical harm, disrespect, resistance to new ideas, and extreme resistance to authority figures. God's providential care and the gift of discernment were very critical to the positive end result.
