The author studied what parish practices encourage an ecumenical understanding of the faith.  A survey was used to gather data from full communion settings.  The author visited three of these ministry settings, conducted interviews and used case studies to determine which practices promote ecumenical understanding.  Friendship among local pastors, and ecumenical leadership among judicatory officials are formative. The effect of ecumenical dialogues and full communion agreements on theological education is analyzed. The method of study included securing support resources for clergy and their families from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and conducting a four-session workshop for clergy and clergy families.
