Five AME churches participated.  Each participant preached three sermons detailing the legacy of the AME Church.  The author's goal was to compile and review data obtained by interviewing project participants, lay and clergy, as to the influence of such preaching on church growth. Wesley spread Methodist doctrines through sermons, and asked early Methodist preachers to preach according to Methodist doctrines. Nowadays, preaching doctrinal sermons as a Methodist preacher can be a way of reviving the spirit of the early Methodist church.  Doctrinal sermons have the advantage of reducing rejection on the part of church members toward doctrinal instruction and making it possible to teach doctrine to church members continually.
