The twenty-first century ushered in yet another subset of challenges facing biblical preaching and preachers. This project examines the mindsets of modernity and postmodernity alike, with a view toward preachers understanding and engaging the habits of modernity and skepticism of postmodernity through the lens of the gospel of God and its crown jewel, the cross of Jesus Christ. Whereas postmodernity asserts that truth is what one makes it and the reader imports meaning into the text rather than derives meaning from the biblical text, preachers must allow the biblical text to say what God intends to say rather than substantiate postmodern indictments toward scripture and its interpreters. A clearer understanding of the inspiration of Scripture is examined from a cultural-historical point of view. Consequently, attention had to be given to this definition and its use.  It was accomplished by observing various ways of classifying sermons with special attention given to the meaning associated with the category 'expository'.  Various methods considered expositional in nature were explored and a refined definition was developed.  A second assumption which served as a basis for the structure of this manual was that certain communiction principles are valid for the preaching event.  The communication principles valid for the preacher to be concerned with are structure, argumentation, and persuasive procedure.
