I produced a contextual commentary on the Apostles' Creed for that purpose, interpreting the symbols of the Creed from the Japanese socio-historical perspective.Chapter One briefly reviews some negative legacy of Christendom commonly known to Japanese people. This kind of knowledge is crucial to make effective communication of Christian faith to the non-Christian people.Chapter Two is a brief introduction to the commentary and the text of the Creed.Chapter Three deals with the first part of the Creed. I point out that it is necessary to convey to Japanese people the meaning and importance of the terms 'believe' and 'God' in a Christian sense.Chapter Four is a commentary on the section of the Creed on Christ. I present the possibility of interpreting the credal symbols within a Japanese socio-historical context. I conclude that our way of life, in accordance with the coming of Kingdom of God in this world, is what identifies us as the people of God.Chapter Five is an experimental description of how a Japanese Christian community can be a missionary community. I suggest the following three points: l.The church should be freed from a church growth oriented concept of mission. 2.The participants of the community are the narrators of God's saving activities in the world, and at the same time those who act out God's divine will. 3.The faith community should live a minority way of life in its society."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135641772228608,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:18.758Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:43:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:55:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e5bf3472-5c6c-479a-811b-2e1e90ae292a","accessControl_ssim":["c2e9649c-2422-4a34-ad7c-7924d3e8533f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Keep it real : starting a Christian hip-hop service in a Reformed context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:43:34Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:42:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["91e62952-6c2b-4667-b6b5-053c81b6c25b"],"hasLease_ssim":["33e93e3b-1709-4286-b3a5-4f52b2793528"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Timothy L Brown","George R Hunsberger"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The gap between the community and church has grown wider because churches are using models of worship that are outdated and paternalistic for the Hip Hop generation. Chapter 1 will provide a biblical and theological basis of 'witness'as the prevailing symbol of being the people of God, who were saved to be a light to the nations. Chapter 2 reports the history of Roosevelt Park Community Christian Reformed Church. I will give attention from the great beginnings of two churches to their eventual deaths, and their resurrection into Roosevelt Park Community CRC.Chapter 3 records my own spiritual journey. My story will provide spiritual markers that has lead me from the Black Baptist church into becoming a minister in the Christian Reformed church.Chapter 4 provides an analysis of the Hip Hop culture and its hold on the young urban generation today. What are the held values of Hip Hop culture? Can the Reformed faith provide answers to their questions about life, God and spirituality? The Reformed faith can speak to the heart, soul, and spirit of the Hip Hop generation.Chapter 5 presents a preaching model that can reach the Hip Hop generation. Preaching is more than a single event, but part of the larger context of worship which seeks a multi-dimensional approach to preaching to the young people of the Hip Hop culture.Chapter 6 sketches the 'Keep It Real' service from an idea to the first worship service.Chapter 7 reflects on what I learned in starting this service, with its mistakes and triumphs and what can others learn from this project for other urban Reformed churches."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135701857730560,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:55:16.060Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:30:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:53:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"80e1985c-4574-418c-bc02-7febc01d91bc","accessControl_ssim":["50ac13bd-872d-4b01-9a67-8c950baedf9f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Embodying Bowen's family system theory and claiming my soul"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:30:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:56:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["da0ab8ba-04e8-4adb-901c-f3ce42ebe12a"],"hasLease_ssim":["1a4156d7-904c-41d9-88a2-cd112896aba3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Thomas Arthur Boogaart"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James T Gottwald"],"publisher_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bowen, Murray","System theory","Clergy--Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Bowen's Family System Theory offers a comprehensive way to think about human behavior. This paper examines how one pastor embodied the theory in a way that takes into account the more inclusive transformation of the gospel. Bowen's theory helped give the pastor a framework in which to understand events in the life of the congregation. There were, however, problems with how the pastor initially utilized the theory. The goal of objectivity inherent in Bowen's Family System Theory was initially utilized by the pastor as a reason to discount the value of feelings and the pastor's own emotional process. The discounting of feelings encouraged the pastor to continue a pattern of overfunctioning. It shows how the pastor engaged in an overfunctioning/underfunctioning relationship with himself and the congregation. To counteract the pastor's tendency to overfunction, the project utilizes a theology of God's immanence as discerned in the biblical tree of life. This thesis shows how with coaching, practice, and theological reflection, the pastor was able to reconnect with his own emotional process and gain trust in God's salvation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135596750569472,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:35.822Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
