In more extreme cases, preaching is regarded as “ineffective” and even an “impediment” to “going missional.” This greatly troubled me, especially since I am part of a Reformed tradition that affirms the ministry of Word and Sacrament as a primary means of grace by which the triune God missionizes us and forms us as a missional people. So I set out to explore the relationship between the Ministry of Word and Sacrament and the missio Dei, particularly interested in what kind of preaching cultivates a missional imagination among God’s people. I came to the conclusion that the kind of preaching that does this is that which draws people into the drama of the triune God’s mission, where our lives get re-scripted in Christ and we are transformed and empowered by the Spirit to improvise our parts (“play Christ”) to the glory of God and for the sake of the world. I then set out to identify key characteristics of missonal preaching toward this end. In addition, I was curious as to which of these key characteristics were most present and most absent in my own sermons and how I might increase my capacity to incorporate them in my regular practice of missional preaching.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1998
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
f5c4473a-df30-4aa7-b931-f608e897525e
582b0082-4a5a-400c-be36-c0d7aeb9419e
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Contemplative leadership formation
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
e4acef1f-4d2f-47e9-849b-ceef6436281a
fd0d037a-54f9-4b39-942b-cdd01f16c796
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
Kyle J.A. What is the church to do? This project emerges as more germane than I ever imagined, proposing the answer to that question as, “Contemplation.” The project begins broadly with the questions, “What is contemplation?” and “Why might contemplation be crucial for Christ-followers?” Contemplation is prayer, presence, and a carriage into loving connection with God, others, and self with whole heart, mind, soul, and body. Having assessed that contemplation is crucial, the project explores, “What does deliberate contemplation imply for the formation of ministry leaders?” a question particularly relevant to my seminary context. The work narrows to a proposed strategy for contemplative leadership development: a four day formation retreat for first year Master of Divinity students, with enneagram content and contemplative framing. Next, research addresses the question of the effectiveness of such a strategy in forming contemplative leaders. By all accounts, the formation retreat strategy turns out to be very effective. The project concludes with a personal accounting of my own prayer journey into contemplation; a journey which has shaped the quality of my relationship with God, the course of my vocation, and the characteristics of my leadership. I firmly believe that if the church becomes ever more present to Christ in every moment, then she will be a transformative presence of Christ in the world.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1984
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
work_editor","public
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
a0bdc84f-cca8-4da2-9540-da9d359f91c2
0db827ac-4fb8-41b7-bd67-36f82c0320c1
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Quest for the perfect sermon : Gospel-centered, story-shaped preaching
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
4c23747e-2404-4e98-b201-6a0ed16558cf
b8eb5356-deea-42e4-a6f2-97f571a0d76e
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
2017
D.Min. The value of sermons is suspect. And yet, I serve a congregation where listeners gather every week with a sense of expectation that they will hear God speak to them through the sermon. I am curious about how this expectation develops and how this expectation shapes the congregation. In my context, we emphasize gospel and storytelling in sermons, and so a focus on gospel-centered, story-shaped preaching narrowed the scope of my project. The first step of my exploration attempted to define the gospel. Next, I looked at storytelling. Finally, I looked at preaching and how it shapes listeners within my congregation, Cedar Hills Community Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In the final stage of exploration, I convened three collaborative study groups to study preaching texts, discuss sermon preparation and evaluate sermons. I used a narrative inquiry research approach to collect feedback formally from the study groups and informally from the congregation. By listening carefully to the stories the congregation told, I explored this thesis: gospel-centered, story-shaped preaching shapes listeners so that they will be equipped to share the story of Jesus in a way that invites others to lean in and say, “Tell me more.” After spending so much time in a story-rich environment, it made sense to report on the project with a story.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1999
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
03036f59-0c58-40ef-b858-77b72728eed1
d77bbb82-6c05-494a-9908-1918c7e40b36
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Storyliving : a faith-in-action experiment in cultivating a community's missional imagination
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
f62318bc-1458-4a11-a287-e2979dd0c9b4
546d9178-57a4-4e6a-83cf-2db51b320af0
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
Ron Rienstra Ph.D.","George Hunsberger
2017
D.Min. Local community leaders who meet regularly to discern what God is already doing in their community and world can find creative and faithful ways of participating in God’s redemptive mission. Moving repeatedly through the Circle of Faith-in-Action can help leaders develop greater Awareness of the people and situations around them, do practical and theological Analysis of what is happening, and respond through Action that not only meets short-term needs but addresses long-term development of health and flourishing in their communities. By the work of the Holy Spirit, their actions result in a new situation that bears developing new awareness and analysis, leading to further action for the sake of God’s reign. The Circle of Faith-in-Action becomes an upward spiral. As people are seized by the power of the gospel, they discover imaginative ways to engage with the reign of God which is already renewing our broken world, through Jesus Christ. God called me homeward, near to the place of my birth and upbringing, to find it. Located among the marginalized of society on the southeast side of the city of Welland, Ontario, Canada, is 36-year-old Christ Community Church. In the aftermath of successive short-term pastorates which ended badly and included an exodus of members in 2005, amid the further economic decline of a once prosperous manufacturing city of 50,000 people, the ministry then 26-years-old was in crisis. With the support of Classis Ontario a specialized Interim Minister was hired for the purpose of discerning whether the church could be revitalized. I accepted the “Call” to serve as its Pastor in June of 2006. It was then that a journey of transformation began. This is a story of dependency on the grace of God. The Apostle Paul describes it in 2 Corinthians 12:9 “But he (the Lord) said to me ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’”1 It is a story that affirms and challenges traditional ecclesiology. It affirms the importance of learning from others in our family of churches through documents such as Transformed and Transforming. 2 Yet, this story challenges traditional ecclesiology with regard to the expectation of self-sufficiency and self-sustainability. It is a story of a small Canadian Church in a hurting place that is being transformed by and with the marginalized people in its context, all the while being dependent upon the grace of God and all of the partners God provides for its own existence.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1986
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
work_editor","public
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
4bec89b0-f5ee-409c-aa75-db1cbeadc3d9
3f6faba2-4823-4797-8d1d-fabdc6086e8d
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Worship as public truth : toward a liturgical-missional ecclesiology for evangelical congregational leaders
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
49da0b4c-19f7-4e0b-8db2-e0bac5afac4c
605fa6f4-e1c4-4016-91ed-f0c6891b5c3c
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
2017
D.Min. I contend that many Evangelicals have embraced only part of what it means to be missional. They are missing one of the essential practices of Lesslie Newbigin’s original vision of missional ecclesiology, the practice of liturgical worship. In order to help Evangelical congregational leaders embrace liturgy I have chosen to draw heavily upon the practical theology method of Richard Osmer. Osmer uses four tasks in his approach to practical theology, which can be arranged in a variety of ways. I begin with the interpretive task, then I move to the normative task, then I move to the descriptive-empirical task, and I conclude with the pragmatic task. In the interpretive task I explore theories from social sciences that argue that human identity is shaped through corporate narratives. I make the observation that corporate narratives can have a liturgical quality to them. In the normative task I explore concepts from Scripture and church history that can encourage Evangelicals to embrace a liturgical-missional ecclesiology. To do this I look at Paul’s narrative ethics in Philippians 2:5-11 and at Lesslie Newbigin’s reflections on liturgy and mission. I also offer some ‘good practices’ that have come out of liturgical-missional conversations in North America. In the descriptive-empirical task I use the case study method to explore the practices of four different Evangelical churches that have embraced liturgical-missional ecclesiology. Finally, in the pragmatic task I offer Evangelical congregational leaders a tool (a guidebook) to facilitate critical reflection on the missiological value of worship. In the preface and postscript I place this project into critical dialogue with the wider question of Lesslie Newbigin’s continuing legacy for the western church.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/2000
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
work_editor","public
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
17ffed0c-aae1-421e-9043-89e08590c879
548524e1-f751-4897-ace0-3a3cc1125faa
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Evangelism as care : four Christian practices for the 21st century
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
1060e73e-4908-4234-8375-3c270e4bbd79
64984808-fa50-40c1-8660-d62c8c995083
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
John Schmidt
2017
D.Min. Cain and Abel. Mary and Martha. Jesus and John. Relationships, one with another whether healthy or otherwise, permeate the Bible. When two people are in a relationship, there are expressions of care and concern as well as an understanding of each other’s backgrounds. When we are in relationship with one another, we want to know as much about the other person as we can. In many cases, this includes knowing about one another’s faith traditions and experiences. From a very early age, I have done what I can to make sure that people around me feel welcome in whatever environment we share. In high school, I welcomed each person who came into the doors of youth group by name with a smile and a hug. I invited all of my non-youth group friends to events because I thought they would enjoy them. Some of my strongest relationships are with people I have known for more than 75 percent of my life. To this day, I want to make sure that wherever we are, all with whom I gather have everything they need to have the best experience possible. Invitation, hospitality, nurture, and welcome are four practices people do daily and would acknowledge they do so. However, they do not believe they can be successful when asked to evangelize. I argue that, when examined through a theological lens, when people engage in these four practices, they are successfully evangelizing. Through the work of this project, these four Christian Practices are defined, examined, and discussed while thinking about how they can benefit a congregation in helping the church to grow in membership.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1985
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
62133bf1-0141-4083-9f4e-293b05868f6f
a03dd3c9-98ad-46e5-85d4-d3511c0ec143
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Outreach to embracing : a Johannine model for community engagement
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
d7fdc928-35b5-4c2d-94a4-3f831955764c
70b73025-8e67-4a7f-bf57-736e3064495b
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
2017
D.Min. Brinkerhoff’s Success Case research method. The success case method brings stories from three actual congregations who exercise embracing practices. The stories are accompanied by song lyrics that harken from the receiving end of the apartheid.Outreach programs have been established by evangelical Christian churches in America to respond to the needs of impoverished communities, to evangelize non-professing citizens, and to attend to systems of injustice.1 These programs have successfully led to the physical growth of the Christian church in America. The church can celebrate the countless children fed, numerous communities resourced, and all the followers of Christ who have actively complied with the teachings of Jesus in the Bible because of its efforts. Christian outreach programs in America have done a great deal to help less fortunate people, but they have also done a fair amount of harm to those they endeavor to aid.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1987
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
5cee12de-65fa-4ff8-be00-0de7ea6213b1
7c9a9b05-5b4b-4e62-b411-24fd466eb412
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Faithful conversations : same-sex relationships and the Christian faith
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
d1d6d9de-546c-4544-8099-76192659588e
bec6ba26-61bc-4c91-ae92-29911691d42d
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
George R. In contrast, this project explores how a local congregation can grow in unity, purity, and peace while holding a variety of viewpoints on same-sex marriage. The project consisted of a congregation-wide event called Faithful Conversations: Same-Sex Relationships and the Christian Faith. First, the pastors complexified the conversation around same-sex marriage and the Christian faith beyond for and against by presenting five faithful Christian responses to same-sex marriage. Second, a licensed therapist facilitated a panel discussion where people holding different perspectives on same-sex marriage shared their stories, values, and viewpoints. Third, the facilitator invited the congregation to interact with panel members using an adaptation of the Restorative Circles process for people experiencing conflict. Data from the project reveal that this congregation defied the pattern of division over same-sex marriage. In fact, the congregation grew in authenticity of relationships, mutual understanding, and theological insight. Based on the results of this project, the researcher developed a model called Faithful Conversations: Same-Sex Relationships and the Christian Faith for use in other congregations.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1982
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
D.Min.
