It argues that one significant way in which congregations can more effectively address the realities of the post-Christian, postmodern world is to recover an understanding of their core purpose as forming disciples. A second workshop, designed for the sharing of intentions, results, and learnings, revealed that more structured evangleism evolved from the participating congregations. The project has three main parts: (1) chapter one lays out the theological underpinnings for the central thesis, a definition of evangelism that can be used effectively and with integrity in the preparation and carrying out of weddings and funerals, and three 'guidelines' pastors can use as they prepare weddings and funerals with evangelism in mind; (2) chapters two and three each contain three case studies which serve to illustrate the central thesis and function as models for pastors who wish to be more effective in their wedding and funeral ministries; (3) the fourth chapter summarizes the author's conclusions and learnings.
