Twenty-three alcoholics and non-alcoholics were interviewed and the content of their responses was analyzed. Alcoholics had a higher number of alcohol-related losses and exhibited chronic and delayed grief reactions.  Alcohol suspended the grieving process.  Sobriety allowed the grief process to be completed. Using attachment theory, grief studies, and family theory, the project views divorce, single parenthood, and remarriage as a process of mourning and recovery.  Divorce both necessitates and interferes with the usual mourning process.  Unfinished mourning alters expectations about remarriage and potentially hinders the formation of stepfamilies.  Interviews with remarried couples and case material from the author's counseling experience illustrate the theory. Working with ill, aging and dying persons can be stressful.  Caregivers often face personal and professional losses while in a caregiving environment.  The need for support through grief education is essential for new and experienced caregivers alike. Training is most helpful when the caregiver is able to talk about personal feelings, beliefs and experiences; learn about phases of bereavement and grief responses; and apply these insights in typical caregiving situations. Through the use of the theories of C G Jung, this project suggests that the complex constellated around the deceased becomes an important component of the bereft's individuation.  Because this complex is deeply shaken at the death, the ego can no longer access the libido that was provided by the complex and the self's individuation process is stopped.  Dreams and-or visions are the archetypal nucleus of the complex renewed in a symbol.  There are similarities between these grief experiences, near-death experiences and the resurrection appearances of Jesus Christ. Caplan and other researchers emphasize that a crisis is characteristically self-limiting and lasts from four to six weeks.  The paper illustrates that a goal-oriented sense of commitment develops in sharp contrast to normal modes of treatment.  Crisis management/intervention is not counseling; its goal is the resolution of the crisis and a return to normalcy. The paper deals with the nature of crisis, the dynamics of grief, and death as a grief crisis.  The appendices are: 1) two verbatims dealing with a dying patient and a grief sufferer; 2) four surveys; 3) a detailed instruction format for persons who are called upon to manage/intervene in crisis situations; 4) practical aspects of crisis intervention/management; and 5) general considerations on death and dying.
