The project invited lay people and clergy, engaged in the praxis of ministry to form a small peer group, to make a covenant as a group, to write theological reflections for shared discussion and group discussion and group reflection, and to move through a process of evaluation of this group experience in light of their ministries and faith lives. One of the assertions of this project is that people of faith and ministry, when engaged in theological reflection with peers realize a transformation of their faith life and in their praxis of ministry. And two, peers whose ministries and faith lives have been transformed by their experiences in peer theological reflection through God's grace will then become vehicles of transformation to the church at large. For fifteen years, American Baptist Churches have used a printed form,  'Church Self-Study of Goals and Leadership Needs', to aid this reflection process.  The purpose of this project was to rewrite the form for the American Baptist Personnel Services.  Information was gained from persons directly acquainted with the document.  These resources included search committees, executive ministers, area ministers and pastors.  Data from each participating group was gathered and analyzed to form the background for the new document of church reflection.  The new form discusses the disciplined and guided thought which takes place when a church deliberately looks at itself -- its being, belief, function and mission. The purpose further is to explore the creative and dynamic tension between these three in global ministry, urban ministry, the life of the judicatory, and the life of the congregation.  One result of the study is the realization that mission itself is an agent of renewal for the church.  When mission occurs, the church is converted as powerfully as the convert.  The conclusion identifies leadership not as authoritarian or as managerial, but as a new style of leadership for a new time.
