In response, the project proposes that a recovery of 'transcendence,' as defined in Carl Gustav Jung's theory of the unconscious, is the antidote to such a collapse. Based on Jung's understanding of projection, conscience, and individuation, the project echoes the call of Erich Neumann for an integration of the unconscious component of motivation in the ethical enterprise, concluding that such integration is as much art as science."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134264827314176,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:32:25.601Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:51:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:13:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"15242069-cc69-4096-b6c1-85bae4131c06","accessControl_ssim":["2a89af96-bcee-4f5b-84cc-0e5287d0d914"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Biblical imagery and individuation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:51:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:44:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4a2e9285-87e0-4f7b-94a3-b82e8c832cf3"],"hasLease_ssim":["c45b8e6e-5097-4e2d-a1dc-b644995cf7e5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["William Ventimiglia"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Madeleine Tacy"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Subconsciousness","Psychology","Bible--Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The hypothesis of this study is the feasibility of using biblical material (imagery) as a catalyst for bringing unconscious material to consciousness. The study briefly reviews the historical roots of unconscious material, gives a short overview of the use of unconscious material within the spirituality of Roman Catholicism, and shows through the use of image material recorded during directed retreats how biblical imagery can be a catalyst for raising unconscious material to consciousness. The results of this study illustrate the effectiveness of biblical imagery as an agent of integration. The method of research is historical and begins with a survey of some literature regarding the origins of consciousness from the unconscious. A study of the human personality according to C G Jung is presented to provide a framework for describing the dynamics of the human personality, conscious and unconscious. A chapter on dreams, symbols and religious experience locates their origins in the unconscious and studies their significance for personal and spiritual development. A brief history of western Christian spirituality is surveyed, indicating a reverence for the unconscious as a source of spiritual growth and personal integration. The spiritual journey foster s a symbolic level of consciousness in order to attach a symbolic meaning to religion, scripture, church, dogma and ritual. This is the foundation for Christian spirituality as the twenty-first century approaches."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133399291789313,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:18:40.162Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:13:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0979fcef-8129-46bd-a240-f00810f0fbb1","accessControl_ssim":["b36e3910-7212-468a-bcad-8d9fe1e5491d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The unconscious church: an exploration of the church complex in a Christian congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:23:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e87492b9-95df-4e46-941f-0570a3a35172"],"hasLease_ssim":["30084dbc-7472-409a-8830-98cf6a5bbf46"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Paul Huss"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Cyrus Fuhrmeister"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Pastoral psychology","Church--Marks","Subconsciousness"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This paper sets forth the hypothesis of an unconscious church standing in the same relationship to the conscious church as the individual's unconscious does to his conscious psyche. An experimental method is described by which this unconscious church is revealed in a congregation. Jung's word association technique is adapted and used to test a congregational sample. Results reveal that half or more of the subjects in the sample gave significant responses to 14 out of the 100 words. Mathematically, this is more than would be expected to occur by chance. It is concluded that this pattern of 14 words demonstrates the presence of the unconscious church. Analysis of the stimulus words and the words given in response to those stimulus words reveals that this unconscious church is concerned with relationships with God and others. It evidences a struggle between good and evil, between the archetypal symbol of the hero and that of the betrayer, between the ego and the shadow. Implications for ministry are explored and applications are made to pastoral work and to church life."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133051414118400,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:13:08.399Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Francis J Roach","hits":1,"label":"Francis J Roach"},{"value":"John Cyrus Fuhrmeister","hits":1,"label":"John Cyrus Fuhrmeister"},{"value":"Madeleine Tacy","hits":1,"label":"Madeleine Tacy"},{"value":"William Ralph Macera","hits":1,"label":"William Ralph Macera"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Subconsciousness","hits":4,"label":"Subconsciousness"},{"value":"Psychology","hits":3,"label":"Psychology"},{"value":"Jung, C.
