2:11-22 and key texts from Luke-Acts to display how the modern church is violating its mission.  The author used a mixed methods research study to query churches around the country.  Quantitative results were analyzed using SPSS while qualitative data was examined using NVIVO. The project, an intensive, 11-day small group experience conducted over nine months, was self-directed. Written case studies, coaching, videotaping, and peer and supervisor feedback were utilized. The ministerial relationship is identified as the locus of these difficulties and as the essential tool of the trade in ministry. Relational patterns in the interactions of misconducting predecessors are shown to generate a process by which the integrity of ministerial relationships deteriorates rendering subsequent ministries predictably difficult. Drawing on relational theory and studies of effective ministers, a model of relational competence is constructed and an ethical standard articulated.
