As a child grows in the society, the child learns the culture’s general assumptions about family relations, relations between men and women, attitude towards life and death. A child learns these assumptions from parents and caregivers. There are other cultural expressions including table manners and the distribution of chores. Of all these inherited conceptions, language is the most symbolic of them all. Language as an essential part of preaching is the subject of this thesis. The hypothesis is that Fidei Donum Priests can be effective Preachers by attending to the linguistic idioms, imageries, phrases, and sentence construction of the local congregation. The language of preaching is the concrete language of everyday life. Preaching language is the language that the children hear and understand and when they do not understand, their mothers offer a simpler understanding of the language with stories and imageries. Stories and imageries create and leave impressions on the emotional life of the people. When Priests use stories, imageries, and metaphors in preaching, listeners identify God’s presence in their midst. And that is why concrete imageries are the best tools for preaching. But the use of concrete language in preaching does not come easy to the missionaries. In recent times, the faithful have advocated for better communication of the Word of God from their priests.One pragmatic preacher in recent times is Pope Francis, who has emerged as one of the greatest preachers of the twenty-first century. There is debate about the influence his preaching model may have on the daily engagement of other priests with the faithful. This study seeks to answer this question: Can contemporary parish preachers adopt Pope Francis' preaching model to enhance their proclamation of the gospel? It develops an argument for the need for greater theological reflection on the vocation of preaching for modern preachers.  It does so by outlining current challenges in homiletical education and ecclesial calls for greater vocational formation for preachers.  It suggests that the writings of Humbert of Romans, in his work The Treatise on Preaching, can help modern preachers gain deeper vocational awareness. Chapter two introduces the general cultural context of the thirteenth century.  It discusses the emergence of the two great mendicant orders the Dominicans and the Franciscans.  It sets into context the life and ministry of Humbert of Romans, the fifth Master General of the Dominican Order and offers a theological analysis of Section One of The Treatise on Preaching. Chapter three introduces a 'dialogue partner' to set alongside the Humbert material. The goal of the dialogue partner was to appropriately apply the material in a practical and contemporary setting.  The chapter does this by way of curriculum development and pastoral practice.  Theories of adult learning are explored and a retreat curriculum is developed that enables the Humbert material to be considered by preachers in a spiritual and educational setting.Chapter four explains a methodology for determining the effectiveness of the retreat for vocational awareness and examines the feedback from participants. Feedback included written questionnaires, video assessment and field observation.  This feedback is used to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the retreat in achieving the goals and outcomes outlined in chapter three. Chapter five offers a review of the entirety of the project based on Scripture verses about preaching which framed the content of each chapter. Such preaching involves a measure of self-disclosure, providing identification between preacher and hearer. The author did qualitative research with men and women in recovery who were participating in Serenity Retreats, and who affirmed the need for a preacher's self-disclosure and awareness of recovery motifs. He also did similar research within a parish setting, with like results.
