Spirituality is here defined as one's personal relationship to God. Jesus makes this very clear in his teachings in the New Testament. In chapters 5, 6, and 7 in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus shows how to live a personal spiritual life that affects the individual and the world. Christian leaders focus too often on programs and statements at the general level while trying to improve the ministry of the church, but goal setting and programs alone do not improve ministry if they do not reach individuals and set their hearts afire for the ministry they are called to do. The early church in the book of Acts attests to the importance of one's spirituality (Acts 2:42). The early church fathers and church reformers were deeply aware that if spirituality is to be found within the church it needs first to be found in the hearts of individuals who are responsible for ministry (Wesley, 'Wesley's Use' 63). Wesley particularly emphasized the importance of spirituality in the life of lay ministers. United Methodist ministry today and leadership of the local church are based on laity and clergy cooperation. United Methodist annual conferences and districts provide continuing education for clergy. One of the most important goals for district superintendents is to take care of the spiritual formation training for their pastors. Little spiritual training, however, is offered for local lay leaders, especially for those serving in small membership churches. This dissertation defends the view that spiritual formation instruction for lay leaders, based on a Wesleyan model, makes a difference. The Bible, prayer, Holy Communion, Christian conferencing, and fasting are still basics for personal spirituality."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134140750364672,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:30:27.271Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:08:13Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:31:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4f48af16-5769-4085-9d5e-dd0bca79a68b","accessControl_ssim":["3255076e-6b79-4b7c-b649-51f5b6adae04"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Staying power: pastoral tenure in church planting"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:08:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:27:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ffc80ae0-fedb-4157-8b0f-23662b2bd091"],"hasLease_ssim":["0c384b57-38a9-4741-a375-a3e9775d43f6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Burrell D Dinkins"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"location_tesim":["Indiana"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Stan R Buck"],"keyword_tesim":["Clergy--Tenure"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","United Methodist Church","Church development, New","Clergy--Appointment, call, and election"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study compared the relationship between pastoral tenure and congregational growth in the churches planted by the northern Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1980-2000 and sought to discern the causes of pastoral turnover in those churches. As people outwardly respond to the grace of God in a worship service, they meet God in a profound and transformational way, more deeply than they would if they had only responded inwardly. The project initiated an invitational ministry time during Sunday morning worship of Memorial United Methodist Church and Patton United Methodist Church in Franklin, North Carolina. The project develops a ministry team manual based on a Vineyard-style prayer method and trains members to participate in this invitational prayer ministry. During the four Sundays of Advent, 1996, 201 persons responded to this ministry. They report finding love, peace, comfort, joy, and encouragement in the ministry time experience. The program has generated increased faith and a new sense of openness and expectancy among these individuals and the congregation as a whole."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134818762752000,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:41:13.875Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T05:10:28Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:38:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c6d9dd71-d0e9-4c69-a156-22c4d1195474","accessControl_ssim":["8c34c49c-305c-4845-852a-aa5293d08b1f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The relationship of pastoral succession to church growth in the United Methodist Congregations . . . of the North Arkansas Conference"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T05:10:27Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:50:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["78d4ccac-42a8-4f8a-abef-8d96274f99d9"],"hasLease_ssim":["6bab48b0-7ce3-422e-993e-b9433055016e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["J Ellsworth Kalas"],"year_tesim":["1996"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bryan W Fink"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Church growth","United Methodist Church","Clergy--Appointment, call, and election"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project examines the relationship of pastoral succession to church growth in United Methodist congregations of the North Arkansas Conference.
