Five small groups participated in a ten-month program of spiritual formation using John Wesley's 'band' model. A questionnaire was administered to the small groups and the rest of the congregation before and after the program. The small groups experienced significannt spiritual renewal but the remainder of the congregation did not. Each group should be unique in method and format. This work refutes the concept that there exists any one 'right group' that is capable of ministering to all people and to every type of need. The author finds the basis for his thesis in the biblical record. He determines that small group ministry would be more effective if it used the principles and methods of modern schools of therapy. John Wesley's theology and methodology that concern the class meeting and the society guide this project. The author updates this method to coincide with the needs of a twentieth century society. The paper includes a description of a 'Groups With Purpose' project in one local church and a design for establishing and maintaining such a ministry in a body of believers. The paper concludes with a discussion of unresolved questions. It conjectures that 'Groups With Purpose' could be a viable ministry in a church of any size if the philosophy is carefully understood and applied."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134003912245248,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:28:16.773Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:49:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:34:24Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"81aedd25-62aa-42ad-a6b8-ba181dabd339","accessControl_ssim":["4a6057d1-ad37-4a26-9752-5e9e5bb02c94"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The assertive pastor: a pilot study comparing Wesleyan and non-Wesleyan pastors in assertive/non-assertive behavior"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:49:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:57:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3a3bb76b-64ca-45cb-a9e8-eae068aa9b5f"],"hasLease_ssim":["6e5ca415-c697-4dfc-b588-f0de45120ab6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["V James Mannoia"],"year_tesim":["1988"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paul Stephen Hontz"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Assertiveness (Psychology)","Psychometrics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author explores the subject of assertiveness and ministry.
