The research attempted to seek out the utilization of certain formative spiritual disciplines which have been historically used by men and women of the church. This research also sought to identify what other, if any, spiritual disciplines and/or habits are being used today as a methodology for spiritual formation. The study sought also, to evaluate those findings in light of the biblical call to renewal and the use and practice of those disciplines, in varying degrees, by John Wesley, a significant theological mentor of the men and women serving in ministry in the Church of the Nazarene. The study was guided by three research questions: 1) What are the methods of personal spiritual renewal being utilized today by itinerant evangelists in the Church of the Nazarene? 2) Are these factors which influence the methods that are being used? 3) In what ways are current formative practices among itinerant ministers in the Church of the Nazarene, USA, congruent or incongruent with a biblical view of personal spiritual renewal among ministers and with the historical Christian tradition? The research considered several variables to ascertain their influence on the current practices of spiritual formation among itinerant evangelists. Those variables were tenure, age, gender, itinerant evangelism as means of support, number of revival meetings held annually, certification, spouse or teammate accompanied travel, educational training. The findings of this study revealed a strong commitment to the principles of the spiritual disciplines."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134613541748736,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:37:58.161Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:50:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:40:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"eece8786-46b2-4a38-844f-b0abc8d884cb","accessControl_ssim":["960d9ea3-837c-4f3f-ada3-001bdd7d3cf7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching to Generation X: the embodiment of postmodernism"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:50:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:57:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["cf7c4d63-1c7b-486d-be91-414d38d83ce6"],"hasLease_ssim":["f99d4e29-c56d-4867-8943-4b6a6686a727"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Leslie A Andrews"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Matthew C Boda"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Expository preaching","Generation X"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In this study, I have attempted to develop a means by which I could research and evaluate the means by which those who preached to Generation X audiences were effectively communicating. The hypothesis was that biblical preaching which connects with Generation X could be identified by means of two elements. First, it is identified by the ways in which it seeks to address the distinguishing characteristics of Generation X people. Second, it can be identified by specific qualities inherent in the act of preaching to Generation X people. The research project involved listening to and evaluating thirty sermons preached by Generation X practitioners. Three sermons were solicited from each of ten practitioners chosen for study. Each was evaluated for their method of preaching. Specific evaluation categories wer related to sermon content, sermon delivery, and the degree to which the sermon was modeled after the teaching style of Jesus. Two specific sermon evaluation tools were designed and used in the course of this study. Each evaluates the sermon in eleven evaluation categories using the Likert scale method and provides the opportunity for the collection of anecdotal evidence as well. This study led to the development of a specific model to be used in preaching to postmodern people. This model is make up of four critical qualities of preaching. The first quality of this model is preaching that is Scripture-steeped; postmodern preaching must develop the means to help people experience the Scriptures. Second, postmodern preaching must be relationally engaging; it must draw people toward the process of journeying and growing in community together. Third, it must be highly relevant; our preaching must relate to the individual life of the hearer as well as the wider cultural context. Finally, postmodern preaching must become multi-dimensional; it must deliver truth in a variety of ways which communicate with different personalities and senses through various media."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134780417376256,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:40:37.306Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:32:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:26:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"13c718f8-d878-479e-b19e-d5b847c78a31","accessControl_ssim":["2ca82442-b42c-4bff-8b33-a7df0408a0a1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Cultivating transformed leaders: an examination of the optimum components of leadership development methodology displayed in current training programs for evangelical ministers in North America"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:32:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:42:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4cb37c94-475f-4c8a-bcef-5531986a1b91"],"hasLease_ssim":["eac4cfb4-c22b-4cd2-a2b1-92d95ea38d57"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Anthony Headley"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dan H Reinhardt"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Clergy--Training of"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This research focused on leadership development methodology. Prior to my arrival, the church leadership had decided to embark upon a period of strategic planning in order to evaluate its ministries and set future direction. The church leadership and I decided to work together in a collaborative strategic planning process, which we termed ReVision, to improve church health and stimulate church growth. We decided to use the approach to church life and health called Natural Church Development (NCD) as the primary model and description of church health. The project at Carlisle Brethren in Christ Church involved the administration of the NCD survey on three occasions--before my arrival as the new senior pastor and the commencement of the strategic planning process, three months after my arrival and still before the formal commencement of the strategic planning process, and eighteen months after my arrival, which was fifteen months into the strategic planning process. Following the release of the results of the third NCD survey, the members of the ReVision Taskforce were given a survey containing four open-ended questions intended to allow them to reflect on the planning process and the congregation's health changes. The quantitative data from the NCD surveys and the qualitative data from the final survey led to the conclusion that the arrival of a new senior pastor and the strategic planning process had been influential in improving the congregation's health and stimulating church growth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134711007936513,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:39:31.112Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:32:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:32:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5dbed0e2-5408-460a-9ccd-4000b64576fa","accessControl_ssim":["853a0fd3-ccdb-4e7f-b756-7ef5e884b553"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The priesthood of all believers: a church planting strategy for an every-member-in-ministry congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:32:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:53:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["01b66f5d-bb1b-4c62-9458-bdd289694152"],"hasLease_ssim":["fa927b1c-d18c-49a9-9db6-0d430063df9d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["J Ellsworth Kalas"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["R Keith Turman"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Evangelistic work","Church development, New"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of the proposed research is to test eight principles believed to be necessary for implementing a church planting strategy, which seeks to empower all members of the Hillsdale United Methodist Church to be actively involved in Christian ministry. Two years and nine months after the first public worship service, a researcher-designed questionnaire was mailed to all ninety-eight members of the church, and a random sample of twenty-five members was selected for interviews. The major findings included: 1) spiritual gift discovery establishes a necessary theological foundation and increases involvement in ministry; 2) evangelism is an agenda that increases involvement in ministry; 3) the pastor's role as equipper empowers involvement in ministry; 4) small groups provide an arena that increases involvement in ministry; 5) vision casting communicates God's vision that motivates involvement in ministry; 6) investing in people through training produces involvement in ministry; 7) need-based ministries inspire involvement in ministry; and, 8) a commitment to membership increases involvement in ministry. Clear evidence emerged in the study that indicated the implementation of the eight principles resulted in a church membership actively involved in ministry. Seventy-nine percent of Hillsdale's members are serving in some capacity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134252965822464,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:32:14.289Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:32:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:37:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b2e1271c-615e-49df-85e0-c7e2a6eb7580","accessControl_ssim":["b103b054-0a72-498e-8b75-3bcddee3a882"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A biblical model of how to train successor leaders: a Latin American perspective"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:32:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:17:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["88b35e5c-5c16-4cb9-8c7d-2009fd1150d5"],"hasLease_ssim":["b90d89da-9132-451f-a3c9-4d827b2b3a82"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Harold William Burgess"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David Munguia"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Full Gospel Church of God (Cleveland, Tenn)","Clergy--Training of"],"language_tesim":["English"],"alternative_title_tesim":["Biblical model for one-on-one and small group training of successor leader"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this research has been to evaluate the impact of a mentoring program for the training of successors to leaders at all levels of ministry in the Full Gospel Church of God (Cleveland, TN) of Guatemala. All mentors were pastors of local churches of the Church of God. All mentoree participants attend local churches of the Church of God. The program included thirteen lectures, continuous laboratory experiences, and a weekly or biweekly report from mentors and mentorees. This research is an evaluative study utilizing pre and posttest questionnaires, as well as essays. These were designed to emphasize qualities that relate specifically to leadership needs of the Church of God. During the nine months between the pretest and the posttest significant positive changes were observed that can be attributed to the program's impact on both mentors and mentorees. The mentors' leadership is evidently the most influential factor on mentorees. The intervening variables of gender, age, race, and ministries did not adequately account for the observed changes. A positive relationship exists between intentional leadership training and succession of leadership. The findings of this study suggest that intentional leadership training is strengthened by a mentoring program designed for successor leaders. Indirect evidence suggests that the duration of such a program be at least six months. This successful program employed lectures, laboratory experiences, and extensive opportunities for direct involvement in ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134561412841472,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:37:08.447Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:18:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:40:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"eb28ffb3-0fe5-44f3-a0ae-3bb58f42b18f","accessControl_ssim":["d80f6560-3460-4ea5-ae41-ebf6e20e0b8c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The impact of a short-term mission experience on faith maturity"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:18:47Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:51:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9a7d620e-48c4-479e-8bff-6208fe55f3ee"],"hasLease_ssim":["bd95b685-fee9-4b0e-b180-b2738d903c7c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Catherine Stonehouse"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dean E Wilson"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Faith development","Lay Church work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study is to ascertain to what extent faith maturity increases as a result of a short-term volunteer in mission experience.
