The purpose of this qualitative study is to evaluate the formational impact of this practice in a small group reading experience in the Marysville, Ohio Church of the Nazarene.  Thirteen self-selected members of the church participated in a thirteen week guided reading experience that required the reading of three biographies according to an agreed class schedule. Participants completed forms recording their reflections and spiritual aspirations as they read and also completed a spiritual life questionnaire before and after the thirteen week study.  All of the group sessions were recorded on audio tape and transcribed for analysis, as were individual interviews with each participant within one week of the final group session. A literature review and the two case studies contributed to a concluding list of 'Advice to those pastoring a church in revival.' An examination of a selection of sermons by John Wesley, Charles H. Spurgeon, James S. Stewart, Alexander Maclaren and G. Thirty-seven pastors were interviewed who claimed to have changed their congregations from an inward to an outward focus.  Twenty-six of these pastors came from thirteen different states and eleven from Finland, Sweden, and Estonia.  Further understanding and insights were gathered from interviews with one Baptist, one Lutheran and one Methodist congregation. An eight-week sermon series was followed by a Sermon Response Questionnaires measuring communication effectiveness according to five levels  (contact, comprehension, acceptance, internalization, and interaction/action) and the congregation's understanding of the intended biblical truth.  Demographics, church involvement and theological views were examined.  Story sermons communicated most effectively at the level of contact.  Significant differences were not measurable at other levels.  The congregation understood the intended biblical truth better in traditional sermons. This research sought to identify the basic components of Christian worship.  Characteristics of baby boomers were identified and a model of worship was created for them that was built upon the foundation of the early church and the first years of the Methodist Church. The study utilized a case study approach describing the church planting programs of five similarly sized denominations, the statistical records for new congregations started in 1993 and 1994, and interviews with church planters,  denominational leaders, and outside consultants. The results of the research do reflect a general receptivity to the four-fold pattern but there was little indication for substantiating this pattern as a common ground for worship in the Church of the Nazarene.
