Numerous anecdotes and stories reflecting 15 years of ministry help bridge the biblical witness with contemporary life in the church.  Study questions at the end of each chapter aid personal reflection and group discussion. Its theological justification comes from the fact that pastor and laity alike share in the shepherding ministry of Jesus Christ in the church.  To both equip my present lay shepherds in the 'basics' of pastoral care and to motivate them to train, in turn, still more shepherds, I proceeded as follows: I led ten of these lay shepherds through a series of eight 'shepherding seminars' on the biblical/theological justifications for giving pastoral care; the four 'givens' of human life; the ten stages of grief; the differentiation of different types of depression; and the development of empathetic listening skills. At the conclusion of these studies, each of the now 'trained' shepherds was assigned some aspect of the aforementioned topics and asked to teach it to a small cadre of 'untrained' shepherds newly recruited from the congregation at large. Those who counsel in institutional settings in particular are struggling with the need and/or the opportunity to counsel those with whom they have some other role.  This is especially true for the individual who offers counseling within the bounds of the local church community.  A minister in the local church setting has many roles in the life of a congregation.  With these diverse roles in place, church members and others in the community turn to the minister for counseling.  The project is intended to shed light on duality and offer guidelines for the pastoral counselor who does counseling in the immediate context of the local church.  The issue of duality is studied from the perspectives of object relations theory and pastoral theology.
