The multi-sensory sermon-event is born out of Christ's mandate to preach to all nations and our call to love the Lord with our whole self.  It gives equal consideration to context and text, content and presentation.  After considering the current cultural climate and effective appropriation techniques, a preaching model incorporating multi-sensory words, imagery, and acts was developed. Postmodern philosophers of language have elucidated the idea that the reader or listener hold many of the keys to authority rather than the author or speaker as was previously espoused. Thus, this project seeks to explore the important role that context plays upon the way preachers go about attending to their task of communicating in the postmodern era. The project explores Fred Craddock's thesis regarding the inductive method of preaching and its continued viability. The project also examines the sociological issues impacting the preacher who would speak a word into the postmodern situation. Preparing to preach within the context of numerous other pastoral duties can make it difficult to see past the coming Sunday.  At times, this limited vision may create a feeling that Sunday sermons have little connection from week to week.  This project is designed to bring cohesiveness to the preaching task. By creating a sense of direction and purpose over a year's time, preaching can be seen not as a series of isolated events but integral parts of an overall plan. Examination of the Christian year and lectionary and the impact these interdependent entities have on preaching provide a framework for the preaching planning guide.  Chapters 1 and 2 respectively look at the history, development and current status of the Christian year and lectionaries. In chapter 3, the limits and benefits of allowing the Christian year and lectionary to drive preaching are presented and evaluated.  A six-step planning guide is the basis of chapter 4. Indicative preaching encourages a forthright, declarative sermon presentation that allows for clarity and theological reflection all at the same time.  In this theory the function of the herald (kerygma) is to proclaim more than to exhort.  Proclamation allows room for the individual listener to reflect, integrate, and respond to the Good News. Indicative preaching thus seeks to draw people into an intimate encounter with the Almighty, without rousing internal defense mechanisms that block communication.  In this approach to homiletics it becomes an exegetical expectation for the preacher to maintain the integrity of the biblical literature, including its mode.  This means adapting sermon preparation to reflect the true nature of the text. The project also presents guidelines for indicative preaching for the parish pastor and a series of six sermons. The methodology used was to review the Fathers' work and preach nine sermons during Advent and Lent using the common lectionary and the work of individual Fathers as it related to a given text and sermon.
