However, the members did not have a working knowledge of the functions of the Holy Spirit in preaching and sermon listening. The praxis director initiated this praxis in an effort to increase the members' awareness of the functions of the Holy Spirit in preaching and sermon listening, and the benefits gained from understanding and articulating those functions. The director designed the praxis to be rooted in the ancient soil of biblical restoration and in the ancient practice of spiritual direction. He believed that this was partially due to a lack of prayer regarding the preaching. He therefore led the church in cultivating an atmosphere of prayer for the preaching through deepening his own prayer life, teaching a six-week lesson series on intercessory prayer, and preaching four sermons on how to have a powerful prayer life. These congregations have not adjusted in order to reach their neighbors. Park Place Baptist Church is such a congregation. While the membership is open to the people of the community, the need exists for the church to prepare to reach the people. The praxis director preached a sermon series, taught a class, and wrote a hymn, with the goal of increasing the value the congregation places on the sacrament. The focus of the praxis will be the centrality of the marriage relationship to our life and our identity as believers. Pre- and post-seminar questionnaires of both participants and their wives are used to measure retention and practice of how to build a Trinitarian understanding of the marriage relationship. Throughout the Scriptures and the history of the Christian church, God has revealed his heart for rural people and places. A group of eight rural pastors participated in a series of four one-hour workshops and a one-hour discussion session. The director was able to assess the value of the praxis through questionnaires and a discussion forum.
