It is evident in many communities of faith and among individual believers that there is a problematic lack of passion, urgency, and interest in faithfully carrying out one's call to discipleship. For this project five individual congregations and their pastors were studied and assessed as models that have bridged the gap from apathy to mission and from casual observer to faithful disciple. Data was gathered through general observation, open-ended questionnaires, face-to-face interviews, and surveys. Each church implemented strengths training after participating in a Gallup Member Engagement Survey (ME25). Mixed methods grounded theory research was used to compare the statistical data from each survey result to the qualitative data obtained from interviews of church members. The methodology was qualitative research with a case study approach utilizing four primary forms of data: interviews, surveys, primary sources, and field observations. In May 2010, the congregation took the Gallup ME25 survey. Case studies were conducted on churches that had made similar efforts. A resurvey in November 2011 occurred following efforts to focus on people's strengths. Meaningful increases were found on multiple items with many increased responses. Overall engagement of the congregation increased, while not-engaged and actively disengaged percentages decreased.
