Using qualitative research methosd the researcher demonstrated that the best practices found among secular organizations in pursuing diversity are effective when implemented in a large predominately white church. The project reviewed current literature and interviewed a corporate personnel director and chaplain assignment officers from the US Air Force and US Navy.  The Army Chaplain School administered a questionnaire to Basic and Advanced students, and chaplain colonels completed a similar questionnaire at a senior chaplains' conference. Denominational polity is a critical factor, especially in the initial phases of a chaplain's career.  The army's accession and assignment processes are 'closed,' as in an episcopal polity, but most chaplains come from denominations that are not 'closed.' Chaplains from 'open' clergy placement systems have less positive attitudes toward the army system. Primary research tools included questionnaries and interviews. Survey results indicate that a high degree of racism in established American congregations (both black and white) sometimes hinders developing relationships.  Ingrained cultural perspectives are problematic. Some Haitians and some established American groups are making significant advances in learning from one another.
