James Fowler's faith development theory, James Marcia's identity development theory, and Marcia Baxter Magolda's self-authorship work provided the theoretical support of the author's research. The researcher reviewed biblical model of the leader/follower relationship or Moses/Joshua, Elijah/Elisha, and Jesus/the disciples. A literature review of transformational leadership and follower-focused leadership models was completed. Servant leadership, situation leadership, and redemptive leadership were examined. Followership was included to understand the emerging leader's responsibility. Three developmental timelines were considered as well. The study resulted a framework for pastors to consider in developing emerging leaders. Emerging leader development involves four areas: spiritual, personal, leadership, and ministry skills. She sought to understand hurts, and the long lasting and negative impact of hurts on individuals and the church. The research was qualitative and used surveys and interviews. Upon analyzing the data the findings were compared and contrasted. The findings revealed passive aggressive behaviors such as gossip and spreading rumors as some ways congregants handled their hurts. Hurts were used by false accusations, a failure to show compassion, and lack of commitment, which negatively impacted the ministry. A theological reflection included a brief examination of Aristotle, St. Thomas, Newburg and non-violent atonement theology. Journey Church, a white, middle class church moved into a poor, working class, culturally diverse neighborhood. The biblical and theological review concluded that the city is God's intent. The literature review explored the ways eschatological views impact the church's understanding of its role in the city. A survey of 110 field team leaders and ten interviews with national leaders responsible for leadership development revealed the need for a biblically grounded paradigm, unique spiritual disciplines for leaders, better equipping for shepherding care of followers, clearer focus toward role complexity, and leaders experiencing greater fulfillment in their calling. The examination of the lives of pastors, leaders, and lay leaders defined as servant leaders based on Patterson's doctoral work, helped in the development of an attribute-driven virtue-focused servant leadership development model. A 'Life Map' is a contemporary term for a spiritual quest to make sense of one's whole life. This researcher discovered the practice with mentors who guided him through a church crisis at midlife using a Life Map. He subsequently led over fifty seminarians in construction of a Life Map as part of their preparation for ministry, observing a pattern of transformation for these adults. This project surveyed the graduates of Bethel Seminary of the East and interviewed eleven, finding solid confirmation for that hypothesis using statistical analysis and grounded theory. As secondary support for the hypothesis, he explored the theme of spiritual formation and transformation in an Old and New Testament character study. This project also surveyed research literature on a noted spiritual formation model, findings from narrative psychology, and an outline of a history of spiritual autobiography.
