Legislation applying to Medicare-certified hospices required them to employ a 'pastoral or other counselor.'  This stipulation is often overlooked.  1987 research found that generally the social worker fulfills the counseling function.  A survey of Massachusetts Medicare-certified hospices conducted for this project found similarly.  The problem was investigated by the survey, literature review, interview with AAPC's Executive Director, and critique by peer pastoral counselors. It is a ministry with terminal patients that seeks to provide spiritual support for the whole person in order that he/she might live a comfortable, meaningful, and related experience for the remainder of life.  Included in this report is a comparison of patients receiving hopsice care as against those receiving traditional care.
