Feminist and Womanist theologies are not currently able to encompass all the needs of the diverse community of women preachers. Employing conversational, semistructured interviews and a demographic questionnaire, the project finds two primary sources of stress: feelings of powerlessness in the appointment process and economic entrapment in the wife's career. In 1989 questionnaires were distributed to ninety-nine United Methodist clergywomen and seminary students in southern New England.  Twenty-nine were returned completed.  Six interviews were conducted. Recent insights into women's psychological and moral development have uncovered the reality of women's different voice.  This thesis has engaged a dialogue among the theoretical constructs of feminist and biblical theology, women's developmental theory, and women engaged in parish ministry.  Through a qualitative approach female rectors have named their experience.  A distinctiveness was noted between women's consciousness and feminist consciousness. The methodology is feminist and therefore attempts to break free from traditional understandings of research. The focus of the research is on the women's experience of ministry and supervision and their understanding of spirituality and their vision of ministry with women.  The insights from this study include the effect of patriarchal structures on women, the lack of skills of critical analysis to identify patriarchal reality, the minimal support and nurture for feminists' spirituality, and the limited provision of opportunity to discuss theology from a feminist perspective.
