Current needs and practices within the Baltimore and Peninsula Annual Conferences (Washington area) of the United Methodist Church are investigated. The investigative research for the study was obtained through the use of field interviews and two direct mail surveys. The field research survey questionnaires were mailed to clergy and their spouses who had relocated with the Baltimore and Peninisula Conferences within a four year period.  Findings are presented and evaluated. Transitions are recurrent events in human life, and difficult for most people whenever they appear.  For a minister leaving a church is a special form of this common experience. Included in this report is a comparison of patients receiving hopsice care as against those receiving traditional care. Participants expressed six types of expectations which motivated their learnings, and their growth is correlated to Fowler's faith development theory. Through the administration of a questionnaire, a survey of the literature, meetings with members of the hospital staff and volunteers who interviewed patients, nine issues of concern surfaced and were acted upon by the pastoral care staff. It focuses intentionally on Centre Church in Malden, a dowtown parish that is declining.  At Centre new groups have been formed with special emphasis on the neighborhood cells and the home Bible study cells.  Through these groups the fellowship is being renewed, the laity involved and the outreach mission of the church extended.  The pastor's role is--visionary, inspirer, equipper, encourager and exemplar. The project focuses on the biblical concept of vision.  Jesus' vision of the Kingdom of God and his use of parables provide a model for visioning.  Significant changes in the larger environment affecting the community and the congregation's response to these movements are analyzed. The project focuses on congregational authority in terms of Scripture and leadership. Using a core committee, a praxis education experience was designed and implemented in an attempt to provide an alternative to teacher/curriculum centered education in the local church.
