The project uses three case studies of patients in therapy to demonstrate the constructive power of core narrative in creating future stories. Deconstructing dysfunctional aspects of these narratives creates emotional and psychological space for reconstruction of more healthy narratives and patterns of life, thus creating experiences of hope and possibility for the future. The author uses the metaphor of The Journey to the West, a popular Chinese classic novel, which is analogous to the current situation and perceptions of many Chinese immigrants searching for a better future in life in the United States. He integrates two primary elements as the foundational models of pastoral care:  Jürgen Moltmann's Theology of Hope provides the underlying basis, with Andrew Lester's concept of Hope and Future as a major factor in this thesis. This project set forth an effective pastoral couseling method to address and decrease depressive symptoms. African-American women's spirituality, and Womanist theology provided the framework for this process.  Biblical stories and cognitive/behavioral techniques, integrated with intentionally 'joining' the client, informed the pastoral counseling sessions. Research involved Aaron Beck's Depression inventory as a pre- and post-indicator of depressive symptoms, with five women participating in ifive counseling sessions.
