Effective spiritual direction can be done in the local church through the sermon.  Preaching as spiritual direction differs significantly from preaching as pastoral care.  The author presents research leading to a definition of preaching as spiritual direction.  In addition, the author presents a pragmatic application of the theory to crafting sermons which have spiritual direction as the principal aim. This ministry is to be expressed within all Christian contexts, including the Christian family.  This project focuses upon assisting some families of First United Methodist Church, San Marcos, Texas, to develop their spirituality.  In this project five to seven families participated in a process designed to enable them to express their spirituality in terms of enhanced prayer life, use of faith language, use of the Bible and of Christian witnessing.
