This project used a series of workshops to educate clergy about spouse abuse.  In the workshops the clergy learned about the characteristics and personalities of both victim and perpetrator.  The workshop examined their knowledge of spouse abuse.  Most clergy are not equipped to minister to victims or perpetrators. The participants use group study methods to explore their theology of visitation as it is reflected in their image of ministry and the church.  They explore such aspects of the visitation environment as location, listening skills, awareness of agendas and time management. At the end of the course the participants construct and implement a program of pastoral visitation which is evaluated after four weeks.  The study gives a greater understanding of pastoral visitation. The author recruits six United Methodist pastors to participate in a retreat and three reflection sessions.  Comparisons of pre-project and post-project impressions of participants indicate a genesis of community. Post-reflection reports reveal expanded insights into pastoral situations.
