In contrast to the Roman Catholic Church's teaching of complementarity--which designates gender-assigned gifts--the synergistic dynamic of mutuality was examined through philosophical, ethical, and anthropological lenses. Three contemporary pairs were interviewed, and three historical pairs were studied, specifically Francis and Clare of Assisi, Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal, Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin. Divine imagery in the spiritual lives of twelve women lay ministers from greater Chicago was explored through qualitative interviews. Using practical theology methods, findings of this ethnographic research was engaged with dialogue partners from Christian tradition and contemporary disciplines--Teresa of Avila's The Interior Castle, psychology-spiritual development theories, and feminist theological perspectives. These two little known individuals, Abba Evagrius and Amma Syndetica, provide wisdom and teachings from the desert that are highly valuable for the spiritual formation of contemporary lay ministers. The project argues that a key to skill's competence is attention to the basic communication issues of identity and anxiety/uncertainty. The project follows a praxis-theory-praxis approach.  It begins with the local theology and intercultural communication tensions of the church of Adelaide, South Australia.  These correlate with social perspectives and communication theories giving rise to theorems and face work that leads to fifteen skills.  A spirituality (from Mark's gospel) sustains such ministry.  Held together by the shared praxis approach of Thomas Groome, the project has four main methodologies.  One is Robert Schreiter's method for constructing local theology. Two are from the area of intercultural communication competence: William B Gudykunst's method of anxiety/uncertainty management and William R Cupach's \u0026 T Todd Imahori's identity management theory. Through interviews, participant observation and the Whiteheads' method of theological reflection, the author places the experience of the interviewees in dialogue with aspects of US culture, post-Vatican II understanding of lay ministry, and Lasallian Spirituality. He uncovers the need for training for transition and theological reflection. The nature of this thesis-project is to explore and enhance the Eucharistic spirituality of liturgical ministers in the context of a retreat. A praxis-theory-praxis model of theological reflection based on the method of Thomas Groome is employed. Current spirituality is named and critiqued by the metaphor of the Eucharist as gift-exchange. This use of this metaphor is a theologically sound image capable of enhancing the religious imaginations of those who serve their liturgical assemblies.
