Making use of critical pedagogies and its constitutions and statutes, the author attends to the community's tradition, the lived experience of Redemptorists, and the U.S. cultural milieu. The author formulates a process of formation that reimagines an exclusive focus on the individual, positing one that is community centered and dialogic. He addresses three different formative moments for pastoral response; the novitiate, transition to ministry, and ongoing formation. He concludes that a wider circle of members must be included in the process of formation for the effective renewal of the apostolic life."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129044499038208,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:09:27.108Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:14:20Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:08:39Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1e94600f-5413-4211-94de-49c337e15e7b","accessControl_ssim":["2faa020b-209a-4078-9d20-96430a543c3c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Creating an open and hospitable environment for addressing sexual diversity in men's religious formation communities"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:14:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:02:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8ef7c0a6-72a5-4ecb-b12a-726e8130bacf"],"hasLease_ssim":["62138419-2755-4a5c-bf13-1ea4c8185a40"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Regina Wentzel Wolfe"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Stephen Charles Niskanen"],"keyword_tesim":["Openness"],"publisher_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"subject_tesim":["Spiritual formation","Hospitality--Religious aspects--Christianity","Christian gays","Monasticism and religious orders","Gays--Religious life"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author investigated, according to a focus group methodology, the thinking and current practices of twenty fellow men's religious formation directors regarding approaches to the sexual diversity of their communities' members. A model of spiritual transformation is developed from the work of Loder, Sobrino, and others. Following a praxis-theory-praxis approach, it begins with a selection of metaphors taken from source material in the author's religious congregation, the Passionists. The project subjects these metaphors to careful scrutiny with the aid of symbolic anthropology (following the work of James Hernandez) and hermeneutic philosophy (following the work of Paul Ricoeur).
