The central proposal is that a liturgical rite, specifically designed for use in home visitation, can be a valuable tool in helping a pastor become a more effective visitor.  A rite modeled on the 'Affirmation of Baptism' order in the Lutheran Book of Worship is used in parish visits.  Response forms from the visited are included in the project. It seeks help from communications theorists and God's word of reconciliation. Theorists offer communication skills and the view of human nature these skills presuppose.  The Word provides a key to completing the definition of human nature and a solution to the dilemma of people alienated from God and from each other.  The thesis states that the collective witness of Christians will be more understandable, relevant and persuasive when the above contributions are used. The paper uses the Wesleyan quadrilateral and an analysis of the local church setting as a basis for establishing role priorities.  The paper includes ten attributes which the writer considers essential for effective ministry.  Senior ministers should take into account their strengths and weaknesses regarding these attributes in order to establish priorities in a realistic and practical manner.
